BRIEF DESCRIPTION: This is a landrace chicken with no single standard, that developed during a 500 year period in the remote and often icebound area surrounding Hedemora, Sweeden. There are three basic types.
This winter hardy breed has much variety including colors of grays, blacks, browns, and whites. Some have almost fur like feathers. Dark shanks and diminished combs and wattles resist frost-bite.
Hens are all year layers in temps above 5 degrees F. The breed will forage through snow even at -5. Possibly this breed is the most cold hardy of all chicken breeds, but may need to be artificially cooled during summer highs in southern climates.

SPECIAL QUALITIES: Hedemora come three varieties: fine and puffy feathers that cover the body with Silkie type fur; feather legged with a good down layer under smooth feathers; and clean legged.
Hedemora feathering not only covers the chickens with high grade insulation but with an unequalled array of color including: champagne, salmon, violet, and yellow with solid, shaded, or laced patterns.
Purists believe that all three feather types and variety of color are needed in a Hedemora flock for best genetic strength. Less than half of all Hedemora hens will go broody, if given the opportunity, and are excellent protectors of their eggs and young. This breed is considered a prolific layer.
