Most sick chickens don’t need an antibiotic — and reaching for one anyway is the most common medication mistake in backyard keeping. The hard truth of the medicine cabinet: the majority of what backyard birds get (coccidiosis, worms, mites, sour crop, viruses) isn’t bacterial at all, antibiotics do nothing for any of it, and in the US nearly all poultry antibiotics now require a veterinary prescription anyway. This guide sorts what actually treats what, where antibiotics genuinely belong, and how to use them without ruining your birds’ gut health or your breakfast eggs.

Why “Give It an Antibiotic” Usually Fails
An antibiotic kills bacteria — nothing else. Line up the common backyard diagnoses against that and the problem is obvious: coccidiosis is a protozoan parasite (treated with amprolium, a thiamine blocker — not an antibiotic); worms need a dewormer; mites and lice need external parasite treatment; sour crop is a yeast overgrowth, where an antibiotic actually makes things worse by killing the competing good bacteria; and the viral diseases (Marek’s, most pox, many respiratory infections) don’t respond to anything in the bottle. Dose any of these with an antibiotic and you get all the downside — wrecked gut flora, resistance pressure, egg withdrawal — and zero cure, while the real problem keeps running.

Where Antibiotics Genuinely Belong
Real bacterial disease exists in chickens, and when it’s the actual diagnosis, an antibiotic is the right tool:
- Some respiratory infections — chronic respiratory disease (mycoplasma) and infectious coryza are the classic bacterial players, typically showing bubbly eyes, swollen face, foul-smelling discharge. The catch: viral respiratory disease looks nearly identical from three feet away, which is exactly why the respiratory guide pushes diagnosis before treatment.
- Bumblefoot — a staph infection of the footpad; mild cases respond to soaking and topical care, deep ones sometimes warrant systemic treatment (bumblefoot guide).
- Infected wounds — predator injuries and deep pecking wounds that turn hot, swollen, and foul.
- Egg yolk peritonitis and reproductive infections — a vet-level diagnosis and treatment call.
Notice what those have in common: visible pus, discharge, wound, or a vet’s diagnosis — not “she seems off.” Vague lethargy is a workup, not a prescription.
The Legal Reality (US)
The era of grabbing a packet of poultry antibiotics off the feed-store shelf is over. Since federal rules tightened (2017 for medicated feed, with the remaining over-the-counter injectables and water-solubles moved to prescription status in 2023), medically important antibiotics for poultry require a veterinary prescription or feed directive. Practically, that means you need a vet relationship — and yes, finding a chicken vet is genuinely hard in many areas. Worth doing before the emergency: call around now (avian vets, farm vets, some small-animal vets will see poultry), because the day you need a prescription is the wrong day to start the search. What’s still over the counter: amprolium (Corid), most dewormers, external parasite treatments, probiotics, and vitamins — which, conveniently, covers most of what backyard birds actually get.
Two things never to do regardless of legality: human leftover antibiotics (wrong drug, wrong dose, wrong species — you can kill the bird or breed a resistant infection), and “preventive” antibiotic dosing of healthy birds, which is how resistance is manufactured and is the practice the laws were written to stop.
Eggs, Withdrawal, and the Part People Skip
Whatever a hen swallows ends up in her eggs. Every legitimate poultry medication carries a withdrawal period — the days you discard eggs (or don’t process meat) after the last dose, letting residues clear. It varies by drug, so the rule is simple: follow the label or the vet’s instruction, and when a product gives no egg-withdrawal guidance (common with drugs not officially approved for layers), ask the vet for one rather than guessing. Mark the calendar the day treatment ends; “I think it’s been long enough” is not a food-safety plan. And the flip side of respecting withdrawal: don’t stop a course early because she perks up — a half course leaves the strongest bacteria alive and trained.
After the Course: Rebuild the Gut
An effective antibiotic is a scorched-earth event for the gut flora that chickens depend on to digest and to crowd out bad actors. After any course: a week of plain probiotics (poultry probiotic powder in the water, or plain unsweetened yogurt in small amounts), fresh quality feed, clean water — and expect droppings to be off for a few days while the ecosystem regrows. Skipping this step is how one treated bird ends up with sour crop or the runs as a sequel.

What antibiotic should I give my chicks to keep them healthy?
None — healthy chicks don’t need antibiotics, and preventive dosing wrecks their developing gut flora and breeds resistance. What prevents chick disease: a clean dry brooder, correct temperature, fresh water, and medicated starter where coccidiosis pressure is high — and that “medicated” is amprolium, not an antibiotic.
My hen has a runny nose and rattly breathing. Antibiotics?
Maybe — that’s the honest answer, because bacterial and viral respiratory disease look alike. Isolate her, read the respiratory guide’s triage, and involve a vet if there’s swelling, smell, or spread through the flock. Guessing bacterial and being wrong wastes the treatment window.
Can I buy chicken antibiotics without a vet?
In the US, generally no longer — the medically important ones went prescription-only. What remains OTC (amprolium, dewormers, external treatments) covers most real backyard cases, which tells you something about how often antibiotics were the wrong answer all along.
Are eggs safe to eat while she’s on medication?
Assume no until the label or vet says otherwise. Discard eggs through treatment plus the stated withdrawal period. It’s a short-term loss that keeps residues off your table.

No. Species, dose, and drug all matter, human leftovers are how birds get hurt and resistant bugs get made — and if an infection is serious enough to tempt you, it’s serious enough for a proper diagnosis.
