re chicken with hard lumps stuck to feathers
by: Sandra

I decided these were dried poo from when she had a dose of the runs, and plastered her botty with oil.

Next day we washed her bottom and picked out the feathers that had these lumps on them, she was calm about it all.

We then put on some pink antiseptic we use for horse wounds and some mite powder. She was a bit red the next day, but it cleared up within days.

Clumps stuck to feathers

by: Anonymous

Clumps stuck to feathers: These clumps sound more like lice and their eggs. Generally the same treatment is used for mites and lice, as they respond to the same chemicals.

If you have seen mites, she may have both. You may need to treat her again to make sure all the parasites are dead and it would be good to follow up and clean the coop.

Spraying it with pyrethrin spray will kill all the mites and lice in the environment and possibly on the chicken's bodies.

Always follow directions carefully when using any product in the environment and on your chickens. If you notice parasites on one, others may have a problem or the beginnings of a problem with parasites, too.

Loss to abdominal feathers/redness of skin
by: Joy

Hi, my 1 1/2 yr old hen has lost her feathers on her abdomin and the area is red. I see no sign of infestation anywhere. She is laying every day and her appetite is good. Her comb is bright red, however she does have a little diarrhea. Now another hen is developing the same loss on her tummy. They get lots of fruit, vegies and even meat once in a while. I know it is not from pecking by other hens. Suggestions? Thanks!!
