What Is Egg Drop Syndrome?

Egg Drop Syndrome (EDS) is a viral disease caused by an adenovirus that affects laying hens, causing sudden and significant drops in egg production along with dramatic changes in egg quality. It was first identified in Europe in the 1970s and remains a concern in commercial and backyard flocks worldwide.

The most distinctive feature of EDS is what happens to the eggs themselves: shells become thin, soft, or absent entirely, and egg color fades in brown-egg breeds. A flock that was producing normal brown eggs may suddenly start laying pale, shell-less, or misshapen eggs — often before any other symptoms are obvious.

Egg Drop Syndrome Symptoms

  • Sudden drop in egg production — typically 10 to 40% decline within days
  • Thin or soft-shelled eggs — shells may be paper-thin or completely absent
  • Loss of shell pigmentation — brown eggs become pale or white
  • Misshapen eggs — rough texture, corrugated shells, abnormal shape
  • Watery egg whites — albumen becomes thin and watery
  • Minimal systemic signs — hens often appear healthy otherwise; feed and water intake normal

In some flocks, a mild greenish diarrhea or slight lethargy precedes the egg quality changes by a few days. Unlike many poultry diseases, EDS does not typically cause high mortality — the primary damage is economic through lost production.

How Egg Drop Syndrome Spreads

EDS spreads through several routes:

  • Vertical transmission: The virus can be present in hatching eggs from infected breeders, infecting chicks before hatch
  • Contaminated water: Waterfowl are natural hosts and can contaminate shared water sources
  • Direct contact: Between infected and healthy birds
  • Contaminated equipment: Shared feeders, waterers, crates, and clothing

Ducks and geese can carry the EDS virus without showing symptoms, making mixed waterfowl-poultry flocks a higher-risk situation. If you keep chickens and ducks together, use separate water sources and practice strict hygiene between the two groups.

Diagnosis and Treatment

EDS is diagnosed by a veterinarian through blood tests (hemagglutination inhibition test) or by submitting eggs and cloacal swabs for virus isolation. If you suspect EDS, contact an avian vet — diagnosis matters because the treatment approach differs from calcium deficiency or other causes of poor shell quality.

There is no specific antiviral treatment for EDS. Management focuses on:

  • Isolating affected birds to prevent spread
  • Ensuring optimal nutrition — especially calcium and vitamin D3
  • Strict biosecurity to prevent introduction of new birds during an outbreak
  • Vaccination in commercial settings (not routinely available for backyard flocks in the US)

Most flocks recover production partially within 4 to 8 weeks as the acute phase passes, though some hens never fully return to pre-infection production levels.

Prevention

  • Source birds from reputable, EDS-tested breeders and hatcheries
  • Quarantine all new birds for 30 days before introducing to the flock
  • Keep chickens and waterfowl on separate water sources
  • Clean and disinfect equipment between flocks
  • Avoid sharing equipment with other flock keepers without disinfection

Egg Drop Syndrome vs Other Causes of Poor Shell Quality

Not every soft-shelled or shell-less egg signals EDS. Before assuming viral disease, rule out these more common causes:

  • Calcium deficiency: The most common cause of thin or soft shells. Ensure free-choice oyster shell is always available alongside layer feed — many keepers skip this and pay for it in shell quality.
  • Vitamin D3 deficiency: Calcium absorption requires D3. Hens with limited sun exposure or poor-quality feed may be D3 deficient even with adequate calcium.
  • Heat stress: In hot weather, hens eat less and therefore consume less calcium. Shell quality often drops in midsummer — this is normal and usually self-correcting when temperatures drop.
  • Infectious Bronchitis (IB): A respiratory virus that also damages the oviduct, causing wrinkled, misshapen, or pale eggs. IB is far more common than EDS in backyard flocks and causes similar egg quality problems.
  • Newcastle Disease: Can also cause sudden production drops and poor egg quality in unvaccinated flocks.
  • Age: Older hens naturally produce thinner shells. A hen in her 3rd or 4th year may regularly lay thin-shelled eggs even when otherwise healthy.

If shell quality problems appear suddenly across multiple hens simultaneously — especially with color loss in brown-egg breeds — that pattern strongly suggests an infectious cause and warrants veterinary attention. If problems appear gradually in older individual hens, nutritional or age-related causes are more likely.
