What it looks like
Birds with this condition may display one or more of the following signs:
Yellow or sulfur-colored droppings (signature sign) (Intestinal tract (visible in droppings)): Droppings are bright yellow, greenish-yellow, or sulfur-like in color — the most distinctive sign of histomoniasis

Death (often sudden in turkeys; slower in chickens) (Whole body): Chickens may survive weeks; turkeys often die within 3–5 days of showing symptoms. Histomoniasis is nearly fatal in turkeys.
Likely causes
This condition can arise from multiple sources:
- Infection with Histomonas meleagridis, a protozoan parasite transmitted inside cecal worm eggs
- Ingestion of contaminated feces or environments where infected birds have lived
- Cecal worms (Heterakis gallinarum) serve as the vector — the worm carries Histomonas inside it
- Turkeys are highly susceptible; chickens are more resistant and may show milder or no symptoms while carrying the parasite
- Young birds are more vulnerable than adults
- Contact with infected turkeys or their droppings is the primary route; do not co-raise chickens and turkeys
What to do
Metronidazole is a treatment option some veterinarians use, but it is PROHIBITED in food-producing poultry in the US—treatment must be directed by a licensed veterinarian. Fenbendazole may be used to treat the cecal-worm vector (by name only; dosing is the vet’s decision). Provide supportive care: clean water, soft easy-to-digest food, and a quiet environment. Isolation is critical — do not allow infected birds near other birds (especially turkeys). Once treated, keep infected birds separated permanently if possible; they may remain carriers. Work with a veterinarian who understands your flock’s status and local regulations.
