What it looks like
Birds with this condition may display one or more of the following signs:
Sudden onset of illness (General condition): Birds become sick very quickly, often with minimal warning

Vent pecking and bleeding from vent (Vent area): Irritated vent area becomes red, swollen, may bleed; birds may peck at it compulsively

Likely causes
This condition can arise from multiple sources:
- Infection with infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV), which targets the bursa of Fabricius (immune organ)

- Most severe in birds 3–6 weeks old; older birds typically more resistant
- Spread through contaminated feces, equipment, clothing, and direct contact
- Stress and poor biosecurity increase severity
What to do
No specific antiviral treatment exists. Supportive care is essential: maintain warm, clean environment with excellent ventilation. Provide electrolyte water and soft, easily digestible food. Isolate affected birds immediately to prevent spread. Use broad-spectrum antibiotics only if secondary bacterial infection develops (consult a vet). Most birds either recover within 7–10 days or die; mortality varies depending on age, strain, and management. Recovered birds often have compromised immunity permanently.
