This rare Bulgarian breed of chicken developed by the Hybrid center of Poultry, Stara Zagora, Bulgaria is red feathered with yellow skin. The breed was developed primarily for laying, giving a brown egg and approximately 200 eggs per year of good size. This is a rapidly growing breed making it dual purpose.
A large Rhode Island Red rooster was bred to local red hens to develop this breed. It’s uncertain if there is a Bantam variety due to the rarity of the breed. The Starozagorska Red Chicken is reported in parts of the world other than Bulgaria, though little known outside the country.
