WEEK OLD CHICK WITH TEARING EYE

I have a 1 week old bantam who has a clear fluid coming out of one eye and it is NOT swollen. She eats and drinks fine and is active. Her eye is cleaned daily but will get stuck shut if it isn't cleaned. She seems completely fine and the fluid doesn't smell at all. She has no other symptoms or problems. It has been like this since I got her. What is it? How do I stop it? Thank you!

CHICK WITH TEARING EYE
by: Anonymous

A runny eye can be caused by many things. Since the eye is such a vital organ, the body will work by sending fluids to clean and heal it.

The chick may have a defect in the tear duct for that eye, it may have had a foreign particle in that eye that caused irritation, the eye ball may have been scratched by something in the environment.

There may be nothing you need to do but let it heal on its own. You could apply an antibiotic salve that is petroleum based, and will help keep the eye from sealing shut.

You might also try to flush the eye with a mild jet of water or eye wash solution, on the chance that there is a small particle still in there.

Good that you see no signs of infection. I believe you're doing the right thing by monitoring it daily.
